THE MANDATE
As Metric’s Occupational Health & Safety Manager, you will lead our Health & Safety Program across multiple civil construction projects. You’ll support crews, project managers, and leadership to maintain compliance, strengthen our safety culture, and ensure everyone goes home safe at the end of the day.
You believe safety isn’t just paperwork, it’s everyone’s responsibility, and will champion the approach that nothing we do is so important it can’t be done safely.
Safety Team Leadership & Compliance
- Lead and continuously improve METRIC.’s Health & Safety Program across the Lower Mainland, Northern BC, and Alberta
- Lead, support, and develop METRIC.’s CSO(s) and other safety personnel
- Coordinate safety priorities and coverage across projects and regions
- Ensure compliance with applicable legislation, COR requirements, client requirements, and company standards
- Maintain COR readiness and oversee key safety documentation, audits, and reporting
Training & Communication
- Deliver orientations, toolbox talks, and safety training for employees and subcontractors
- Chair the Joint Occupational Health & Safety Committee, promoting communication between field and leadership
- Promote a strong safety culture through mentorship, coaching, and consistent presence on-site
- Ensure certifications and training records are current and documented
Incident Management & Continuous Improvement
- Lead or oversee investigations of incidents, injuries, near misses, and significant safety concerns
- Identify root causes and ensure corrective actions are completed
- Monitor safety trends and performance and provide recommendations to leadership
- Support injury management and return-to-work programs with HR
Field & Project Safety
- Maintain a regular presence on active construction sites
- Work with project teams to identify risk and integrate safety into project planning and execution
- Oversee inspections, risk assessments, Project-Specific Safety Plans, and corrective actions
- Participate in project start-ups and support higher-risk work activities

What We Need From You
- Minimum 5 years of health and safety leadership experience in civil construction
- Strong knowledge of occupational health and safety legislation and COR requirements in BC; experience with Alberta requirements is considered an asset
- CSO (or NCSO) and CRSP certification, along with OFA Level 1 or higher
- COR Internal Auditor certification
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with field crews, project teams, clients, and leadership
- Experience leading or supervising safety personnel
- Experience in risk assessment, safety program development, training, and incident investigation
- Proficient with Salus or similar safety management platforms
- Class 5 driver’s license with a clean driver’s abstract
Working Conditions
Site-Based Role
- Primarily based on active civil construction sites with exposure to noise, dust, heavy equipment, uneven ground, and changing weather. Regular attendance will also be required at head office in Chilliwack, BC. This is not a work from home position.
Physical Demands
- Regular walking, standing, and climbing on-site; occasional lifting of safety gear or materials (up to 25 lbs).
Outdoor Work
- Year-round field work in all weather conditions; PPE required at all times.
Flexible Hours
- Hours vary by project. Early starts, late finishes, or occasional weekend work may be required for inspections or incident response.
Active Environment
- Must stay alert to equipment movement and site activity to maintain safety awareness.
Communication
- Frequent interaction with field teams, supervisors, subcontractors, and management. Requires a calm, consistent, and approachable leadership style.
Reporting
- Regular use of Salus and digital tools for inspections, documentation, and incident reporting.
