About MLCommons
MLCommons builds and deploys benchmarks that standardize AI measurement and enable informed decisions. As an engineering consortium supported by over 150 members, including some of the largest tech companies, plus startups, academics, and nonprofits, our staff and working groups create and maintain industry-standard assessments. Our flagship offerings are the industry-standard MLPerf for hardware performance and AILuminate for assessing the risks and reliability of AI systems in applied environments.
About the Role
MLCommons seeks an experienced enterprise marketing leader to help it grow into new markets and revenue streams in the midst of enormous anxiety and opportunity around AI.
For the first time, we are offering paid products through direct sales and channel partners. We also have substantial support from, collaboration with, and obligations to our 150+ members. Thus, this role manages the identity and growth of both a member-driven organization and an enterprise SaaS company in one, from brand to launch to pipeline. There’s a lot of work to be done; a confident, collaborative, and curious leader will maximize leverage, make tough prioritization decisions, and advocate for a strong marketing and communications team in a deeply engineering-minded organization.
We are a small team with big goals. Your primary responsibilities will include:
- Product marketing. MLCommons has some exciting product developments underway in both performance measurement and reliability measurements. These initiatives demand a shift in communications, from a primarily standards-oriented, community-centric communications model to one that incorporates B2B product marketing. Your role will be to help the organization make this shift, while remaining true to its roots in open, collaborative engineering.
- Community cultivation. As a member-driven organization, we depend on the financial and engineering investments our members and contributors make. And our efforts can benefit tremendously from leveraging the capacity and credibility of our members’ own marketing and communications.. You will be responsible for unlocking these resources with a strategy and plan to deeply engage our members in our work. Imagine bringing together the grassroots and highly technical nature of developer relations, the high-touch, high-stakes nature of corporate relations, the softer side of community cultivation, and the nitty-gritty of relentlessly driving membership growth. All in an organization that prides itself on values of openness and collaborative engineering.
- Thought leadership and brand awareness. We are not an advocacy organization, and we do not have a consumer-facing brand nor a strong PR practice. But we do have a (sometimes strong!) point of view about what will be required to accelerate AI development and adoption over the coming decade; given how the benchmarking field has evolved, it’s essential that our perspective be sought and heard. In this role, you will help us craft and communicate our point of view in ways that resonate with our key audiences, building MLCommons a reputation as a key thought leader in AI. Along the way, we also expect you to develop opinions about our brand and help evolve it.
You won’t be doing this alone. We have great people working directly and indirectly on marketing tasks, and we have some budget to build a team.
There is a lot of detailed work that goes into each of these focus areas, and we will look to you to help define the objectives, strategy, and tactics for driving that work forward.
MLCommons is a fully remote organization, and we support flexible working environments and situations.
The target salary range for this position is $175–200k, plus benefits.
About You
You are a seasoned marketing leader with experience managing product and brand narratives and cultivating relationships on behalf of organizations. Ideally, you have experience in product marketing at companies selling enterprise solutions. These are some qualifications you might have, but none of these are prerequisites for the role — if you’re excited by the opportunity outlined above, we want to hear from you!
We are looking for someone who:
- Is a structured and clear communicator. Ideally, you have a demonstrated track record of making novel ideas a reality within organizations or communities. You structure problems clearly, enabling leaders to make informed decisions.
- Has a bias for action. You take pride in getting things done efficiently and effectively, with buy-in from your key stakeholders.
- Is a quick study. AI moves fast, and our community of technical experts is working at the cutting edge of many disparate areas of research and across many different industry verticals. You have a beginner’s mind and can build trust with the most expert contributors in our community.
- Is well-informed about AI. You may not be the earliest adopter of AI tools, but you follow the industry closely, know the key players at all levels of the AI stack, and are familiar with the basics of their business models. You enjoy trying out the latest models and apps, and are deeply curious and thoughtful about the impact AI will have on the world.
- Loves building community and partnerships. You enjoy building relationships with people from all kinds of backgrounds and with all kinds of expertise. In particular, you get along well with engineers and have an appreciation for the complexities of large tech companies, civil society, and government regulators.
- Has 10-15+ years of experience in tech, several of which in marketing. Product marketing experience in particular is most valuable; developer relations, community management, product management, or enterprise sales/partnerships/business development are all great experiences to bring too.
How We Work
How we pursue our mission matters as much as what we build. Our team shares a set of operating values that describe how we work together, and we look for people who embody these values:
- Say the difficult thing directly. We name problems plainly and early, even when it would be easier not to.
- Default to generosity. We read each other’s intentions in the most generous light and assume good faith.
- Default to transparency. We share what we know and work in the open, so others can build on it.
- All voices count, then commit as one. We make room for every voice in the decision, and once we decide, we move together.
- Say it, own it, do it. We deliver what we said we would and take ownership of the outcome.
- Try, learn, adapt. We experiment, learn from what happens, and adjust as we go.
- Together, not territory. We work for the shared mission rather than individual status or turf.
