Expedition Leader (Greenland)

Natural Habitat Adventures is actively hiring experienced Expedition Leaders for upcoming opportunities guiding departures of our East Greenland Arctic Adventure itinerary beginning in July 2027.

Our Expedition Leaders are highly skilled naturalists, educators, and professional guides who are deeply passionate about conservation and the wild places they share with our guests. Combining natural history expertise with exceptional guest service, they deliver engaging, science-based interpretation and create safe, meaningful small-group experiences that deepen travelers’ understanding of wildlife, ecosystems, and conservation while inspiring curiosity, appreciation, and stewardship.

To comply with Greenland’s tourism regulations, only applicants who are legally authorized to work in Greenland without requiring a work permit (citizens of Greenland, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, or Sweden) will be considered.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Interpretation & Education

• Deliver engaging, science-based natural history and conservation education tailored to each group’s interests, knowledge level, and field conditions.
• Spot wildlife and facilitate safe, ethical, and memorable wildlife viewing experiences.

Guest Experience

• Lead exceptional multi-day, small-group experiences while fostering a welcoming, inclusive, and engaging group environment.
• Provide attentive, personalized guest service by anticipating needs and adapting to individual interests and abilities.
• Communicate daily logistics, safety information, and trip expectations clearly and professionally.

Operations & Leadership

• Prepare for and lead the day-to-day execution of each trip, coordinating logistics, transportation, accommodations, meals, and itinerary adjustments as needed.
• Work collaboratively, professionally, and respectfully with fellow Field Team members, Nat Hab office staff, and local partners to ensure safe, seamless trip operations and clear, timely communication.

Safety, Problem Solving & Stewardship

• Prioritize guest safety through proactive risk management, sound judgment, and calm, effective decision-making in changing field conditions.
• Anticipate and resolve operational and guest-related challenges while upholding Nat Hab policies, Leave No Trace principles, and environmentally responsible travel practices.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience & Education

• Applicants must have one or more of the following:
  • At least five years of professional guiding experience leading multi-day, small-group tours;
  • A bachelor's degree in natural sciences or a related field; or
  • An equivalent combination of relevant education and professional guiding experience.
• Deep knowledge of the region's natural history, including wildlife, ecology, habitats, plants, and geology, with a passion for sharing that knowledge with others.
• Professional guiding experience in the specific areas outlined in this itinerary preferred.
• Photography knowledge and experience providing professional photography instruction preferred.

Physical Requirements

• Able to work long hours for multiple consecutive days in physically and mentally demanding outdoor field environments.
• Must comfortably and reliably meet the physical requirements outlined for this itinerary.

Skills & Attributes

• Exceptional teaching, natural history interpretation, and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate scientific concepts clearly and engagingly in both formal presentations and informal field settings.
• Excellent customer service, communication, and group management skills.
• Confident, solutions-oriented problem-solver with the ability to make autonomous decisions under pressure and navigate changing field conditions, complex group dynamics, and unexpected challenges.
• Professional, proactive, and adaptable, with a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and the ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively.
• Demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning and staying current with developments in natural history, ecology, and conservation.
• Fluency in English required.

Required Credentials & Certifications

• The following credentials and certifications are not required at the time of application but must be obtained before an Expedition Leader’s first scheduled trip:
  • Wilderness First Responder Certification (or equivalent locally recognized advanced outdoor first aid training with a minimum of 70 instructional hours)
  • CPR Certification
  • Zodiac Driving Course
  • Sea Kayaking Course
  • Firearms License
• Nat Hab will provide successful applicants with information, including guidance on acceptable courses and providers. Expedition Leaders are responsible for scheduling, completing, and covering the cost of all required training and certifications.

SCHEDULING & AVAILABILITY

Expedition Leaders are contracted for individual trips scheduled during the operating season for this itinerary (between approximately early July and early September). This is not necessarily a full-season assignment.

Preference will be given to applicants who can commit to at least three trips (a minimum of 30 days total) and who have flexibility across the operating season.

Expedition Leaders should expect a variable schedule based on trip dates and operational needs, including long days while on assignment and varying amounts of time off between trips.

Under normal scheduling timelines, our Greenland Expedition Leaders are expected to submit their availability for the following season by mid-March, with schedules typically communicated by mid-April.

Shared accommodations with another Field Team member or Nat Hab office staff may be required based on operational needs.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

This is an independent contractor position compensated at a competitive daily rate based on experience, plus guest gratuities. Contractors are eligible for annual rate increases based on performance.

Additional $100 USD ($140 CAD) per day on regular guest-facing trip days in Greenland in recognition of the specialized skills, added responsibilities, and challenging operating environment required for this role.

Nat Hab provides required transportation, lodging, and meals while on assignment, as well as branded gear.

Comprehensive paid training is provided before the first trip.

Expedition Leaders receive a learning stipend of $100 USD ($140 CAD) for their first season guiding in a new region and $50 USD ($70 CAD) in subsequent seasons.

Additional compensation opportunities are available for qualified Photo Expedition Leaders and approved visual media contributions, including photography, video, and social media assets.
