Join the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR), where world-class scientists, engineers, and experts are accelerating energy innovation through breakthrough research and systems integration. From our mission to our collaborative culture, NLR stands out in the research community for its commitment to an affordable and secure energy future. Spanning foundational science to applied systems engineering and analysis, we focus on solving complex challenges to deliver advanced, secure, reliable, and cost-effective energy solutions. Our work helps strengthen U.S. industries, support job creation, and promote national economic growth.
At NLR, you'll find a mission-driven environment supported by state-of-the-art facilities, multidisciplinary research teams, and strong collaborations with industry, academia, and other national laboratories. We offer robust professional development opportunities, and a competitive benefits package designed to support your career and well-being.
A limited term Researcher III position is available in NLR’s Materials, Chemical and Computational Science Directorate on research efforts in perovskite photovoltaic modules for space applications.
This position will focus on the design, development, and fabrication of application-specific perovskite photovoltaic modules for space using scalable deposition methods.
The collaborative environment requires a candidate who can interface with researchers of different disciplines and learn topics outside their area of expertise. Candidates will be expected to communicate their results to internal stakeholders and in more traditional journal publications, and conference presentations.
In general, candidates should have a demonstrated track record of success in technical activities associated with automation and be comfortable formulating value proposition automation use cases in a technologically relevant way while addressing key science questions to challenging problems as part of a team effort. The candidate will be required to work closely with the Environment, Health, & Safety team to follow safe work procedures, as well as to handle waste properly and keep a clean, well-organized work environment.
This position is needed to strengthen and expand NLR’s capabilities in an area of growing strategic importance, where success depends not only on high-efficiency devices, but also on scalable manufacturing, module integration, stability, and application-specific engineering.
This hire will play a critical role in advancing NLR’s perovskite module programs by helping establish stronger technical leadership in module architecture, scalable processing, and application-driven design. The candidate is expected to work closely with industry partners, helping align internal research with external needs and increasing the lab’s ability to pursue high-impact collaborative opportunities. This position will also support development of new technical concepts and research directions that can broaden NLR’s portfolio, strengthen competitiveness for future funding, and contribute to long-term program growth and diversification.

* Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.
This position requires specialized expertise in perovskite module design, development, and fabrication for space applications.
The ideal candidate will bring demonstrated experience in coating all functional layers of perovskite devices using scalable deposition methods, along with expertise in module design, patterning, interconnection, and performance optimization.
In addition to module fabrication, this role requires deep understanding of stability testing and failure analysis, particularly as they relate to long-term operational durability and translation from lab-scale devices to larger-area modules. Experience with space-specific design constraints and environmental challenges will be especially important as NLR continues to evaluate perovskite technologies for aerospace and flight-relevant applications.
Ability to formulate testable research hypotheses and independently lead experiments in the laboratory. Critically analyze results and present research updates, propose research experiments on a regular basis, draft manuscripts, and write research proposals.
Candidate should be well versed in perovskite photovoltaic literature, design principles for space technologies, and the state-of-the-art for perovskite photovoltaic modules.
.
The anticipated closing window for application submission is up to 30 days and may be extended as needed.
NLR takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
