Post Doctoral Research Associate - Powder based Pharmaceutical Product Development

Position Summary:

This is a Postdoctoral Research Associate position. We are seeking a self-motivated individual with strong engineering background. The candidate is expected to have excellent hands-on skills, self-initiative, attention to details and ability to engage in experimental research in various projects and be able to integrate available models with the experimental data. Our group specializes in particle engineering and developing model based predictive tools to push the processability of drug products leading to improved quality and performance. The person should also be able to plan and conduct physical experiments. Ideal candidate will collaborate with faculty, doctoral students, and postdocs within Center for Integrated Material Science and Engineering for Pharmaceutical Products (CIMSEPP) which is a NSF Industry-University Cooperative Research Center (IUCRC) at NJIT.

Essential Functions:

• Lead challenging research topics in powder based drug product development. Projects include enhancing the flowability of needle-shaped APIs and their formulated blends, tackling challenges with the particle scale characterization of spray dried dispersions (SDDs) and developing granular Bond number based bulk property predictions, developing predictive understanding of segregation drivers that adversely impact drug content uniformity, understanding the effect of shear during dissolution of compressed matrix  tablets, prediction of bulk properties of powder blends and process scale up for surface modification based property enhancements and exploring physics-based AI/ML tools to improve predictive formulation development tools.
• Integrate experimental data with prediction tools including available models and physics-based ML methods.

Additional Functions:

Responsibilities include:

• Leading the assigned projects and developing experimental plans and workflow.
• Integrating experimental data, knowledge, and material parameters into modeling framework. Preferably, developing predictive models via a combination of granular physics and AI/ML to predict bulk properties and other key performance parameters.
• Supervision of undergraduate and Master’s degree students on their related projects.
• Be the main point of contact (POC) for all experimental topics and related analytical methods.
• Disseminate results through peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, and reports to the CIMSEPP Industrial Advisory Board (IAB).

Pre-Requisite Qualifications:

• A Ph.D. in Engineering with significant hands-on experience with particle handling and processing along with modeling tools.
• Strong expertise in powder characterization, processing, pharmaceutical unit operations, experimental particle technology, and particulate physics.
• Proficiency in coding for data analysis and applying team-developed predictive models is highly desirable.

At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
