The Emergency Room Technician performs duties under the general supervision of the Emergency Room Registered Nurse. The role is supportive relative to the care of patients in the Emergency Department. The Emergency Room Technician communicates directly with providers, RNs, patients, patient’s families, and other caregivers. The Emergency Room Technician is responsible for documenting cares, treatments, and/or testing performed while caring for the patient.
Clinical Practice and Quality of Care:
- Takes direction from RN or provider to maintain high standard of patient care
- Responsible for accurate recording in electronic medical record as directed or needed
- Responds to pages/codes accordingly and assists as directed
- Assists with restraints when directed
- May act as an observer for behavioral health issues (one-on-one)
- Provides orthopedic support goods or crutches when applicable
- Follows established safety and emergency policies and procedures in daily practice or emergency situations, including handling of equipment and supplies during emergencies
- Performs hazardous substance decontamination of contaminated patient(s) while wearing appropriate personal protective equipment, including the use of a powered air-purifying respirator and is an active member of the Decon team
- Able to competently complete 12-lead EKGs
- Able to transport specimens to lab and other departments as directed
- Able to transport and assist with patients transfers and mobility needs
- Performs registration tasks in the Emergency Room
- Practices within the scope of practice of a nurse’s aide in the state of Maine.
- Performs quality audits.
- Restocks rooms and manages par levels of critical items
- Serves on the code team

Other Skills and Responsibilities:
- Prepares and cleans equipment and rooms
- Tracks and maintains equipment and supplies for department and individual rooms
- Serves as a troubleshooting resource in department for us of equipment
- Identifies and communicates any issues related to supplies, equipment, and environmental safety to leadership team
- Monitors and retrieves misplaced equipment
- Performs clerical functions as needed, such as processing completed charts, obtaining medical records, placing phone calls as directed by ED staff, and assisting with admission and discharge paperwork
Education
Minimum - High school Diploma
Preferred - Certified Nursing Assistant or completion of an EMT or Paramedic program.
Experience
Preferred - Relevant experience in Emergency Departments, hospitals, or other healthcare entities to include EMS.
Licenses & Certifications
Minimum - CPR/BLS Certification
Preferred - CNA, EMT; Paramedic.
