We’re looking for an SDE2 Backend Engineer — Golang / Platform who is strong in Golang, backend systems, clean architecture, debugging, performance, and execution ownership.
This is not a typical CRUD/backend role. You will work on backend systems that behave more like infrastructure: connectors, workers, replication flows, checkpointing, concurrency, retries, schema handling, and destination writers.
You do not need to already be an expert in data engineering, CDC, Apache Iceberg, Parquet, or lakehouse systems. These are things you can learn here.
What matters most is that you are a strong backend engineer who can understand complex systems, write reliable production code, debug deeply, and own features end-to-end.
What you’ll work on
As an SDE2 Backend Engineer at OLake, you will work on core backend and platform components that power high-performance data replication.
You will:
- Build and maintain production-grade backend systems in Golang
- Work on OLake’s core ingestion engine, connectors, replication workflows, checkpointing, schema handling, and destination writers
- Design and implement scalable APIs, workers, network calls, storage flows, and concurrency-heavy systems
- Write clean, idiomatic, testable, and maintainable Go code
- Debug complex issues across application code, databases, logs, infrastructure, and runtime behavior
- Improve system reliability, error handling, retries, observability, and production readiness
- Profile and optimize code for throughput, memory usage, latency, and reliability
- Participate in design discussions and contribute to technical decisions
- Collaborate with senior engineers and tech leads to ship high-impact backend features
- Contribute to OLake’s open-source engineering culture

What we expect
- 2–4 years of professional software engineering experience
- 1+ years of hands-on Golang experience
- Strong understanding of backend fundamentals: APIs, services, workers, databases, queues, and concurrency
- Practical knowledge of Go concepts such as goroutines, channels, context, interfaces, testing, profiling, and memory behavior
- Experience building and owning backend features end-to-end
- Good understanding of databases, networking, Linux, and system design fundamentals
- Ability to write clean code with good abstractions, tests, and error handling
- Experience debugging production or production-like issues using logs, metrics, traces, or runtime profiling
- Familiarity with Docker, CI/CD, Git, and cloud-based development environments
- Strong ownership mindset and ability to communicate clearly with engineers, product, and founders
Good to have, but not mandatory
- Experience with data engineering, ETL/ELT, data replication, connectors, CDC, or ingestion systems
- Familiarity with PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Kafka, Debezium, Airbyte, Fivetran, Spark, or Flink
- Exposure to Apache Iceberg, Apache Parquet, Apache Arrow, Delta Lake, Hudi, Trino, or lakehouse architectures
- Experience with Kubernetes, Helm, observability stacks, distributed jobs, or worker orchestration
- Prior startup or open-source experience
- Experience working on high-throughput, memory-sensitive, or concurrency-heavy systems
