REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

As part of Potentia’s Business Management team, this position reports to the Vice-President, Business Management, and has no direct reports.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Someone who has hands-on experience with PV solar equipment. You may have commissioned commercial rooftop and ground-mount systems, run service on an inverter fleet, or carried a site through its first years of operation. You can read a service report or a diagnostic and tell whether a contractor’s work holds up.

This role puts that operational knowledge to work on the business side. You will own the financial and commercial performance of a portfolio of solar assets, and you will be Potentia’s solar technical reference across the company, on the projects we are developing and the portfolios we are acquiring. Roughly a third of this role is operational oversight. The rest is commercial, financial, reporting and stakeholder work, and you will build that side of the skillset here, with support.

ACCOUNTABILITIES AND KEY FUNCTIONS

The Associate Business Manager, Solar is responsible for the operational, financial and commercial performance of a portfolio of PV solar assets and serves as Potentia’s solar operations subject matter expert.

This role lets you run a renewable energy business end to end. Business Managers have direct responsibility for project-level P&L performance and oversee the full range of activities required to operate infrastructure assets successfully, including operations management, financial management, contract administration and stakeholder management.

You will work closely with Finance, Legal and other subject matter experts to ensure projects operate safely, compliantly and profitably. The role also provides exposure to renewable energy markets, project finance, regulatory frameworks and long-term asset strategy, with room to grow within the team.

Potentia is a medium-sized, collaborative and fast-growing organization, and Business Managers play a central role in the company’s success. You will typically be responsible for managing two to four solar portfolios, while supporting solar work across the wider business.

Role & Responsibilities:

Solar Technical Leadership, Company-Wide

• Be Potentia’s solar operations subject matter expert, advising Development, Construction, Investment and Finance on solar O&M strategy and cost.
• Lead technical due diligence on solar acquisitions: site condition assessments, equipment history and remaining life, warranty status, production models, and O&M and EPC scopes.
• Build the operating assumptions behind new solar projects, covering O&M scope, spares strategy and availability.

Operational Performance and Asset Oversight

• Monitor operating performance, availability and energy production across the portfolio.
• Review maintenance plans, service reports and site conditions with O&M providers, and push them on availability, response times and workmanship.
• Track outages, curtailment and equipment failures, and coordinate the response with operations teams and contractors.
• Carry out major maintenance, equipment replacement and repowering work, with support from external engineering and EPC partners.

Portfolio Financial Performance and Project Economics

• Prepare and manage annual operating budgets, rolling forecasts and monthly financial reporting for assigned assets.
• Monitor project revenues, operating costs and cash flow performance, investigate the drivers of variance and implement corrective action where required.
• Use general-purpose AI tools to build and maintain repeatable workflows for budgeting, variance analysis and recurring reporting, and verify the output before it goes anywhere.
• Manage project financing compliance, including covenant monitoring and lender reporting packages.
• Find and act on ways to improve project cash flow, whether through cost savings, new revenue or operational improvements.

Commercial Management and Energy Market Participation

• Administer commercial agreements, including offtake contracts, environmental attribute programs and other revenue arrangements, and keep the projects compliant with them.
• Prepare and issue invoices, review settlement statements and resolve discrepancies with counterparties and market operators.
• Monitor energy market performance and merchant exposure, coordinating with schedulers and market participants to optimize project revenues.
• Track contractual obligations and manage required notices, reporting and compliance obligations across project agreements.
• Support amendments, renegotiations or extensions of commercial agreements and manage the related documentation and approvals.

Stakeholder, Regulatory and Contract Administration

• Prepare and deliver project reporting for lenders, investors and partners, including operating reports, budgets and compliance documentation.
• Manage day-to-day relationships with lenders, partners, offtakers, landowners, host customers and community representatives.
• Ensure projects remain compliant with regulatory requirements, environmental permits, interconnection agreements and other project obligations.
• Coordinate responses to regulatory inquiries, audits and compliance reviews, and maintain the required documentation.
• Keep project agreements, documents and stakeholder correspondence organized and current.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Background

• Ready to move from a technical solar role onto the commercial side of the business.
• Experience in renewable asset management or development is a bonus.
• Certifications or a degree related to PV solar are welcome.

Solar Technical Depth

• Strong working knowledge of PV equipment: string and central inverters, modules, racking and single-axis trackers, combiners, medium-voltage transformers and collection systems.
• Comfort with SCADA and monitoring platforms, and with diagnostic work.
• Familiarity with O&M scopes and equipment warranties.
• Experience with Ontario programs such as FIT, microFIT and net metering, or with commercial and industrial offtake arrangements, is an asset.

Business Skills

• Comfort with numbers: budgets, variance analysis and what drives a project’s cash flow. You do not need advanced finance experience.
• Ability to manage contracts and stakeholder relationships.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving ability.
• Comfort using general-purpose AI tools such as Claude to execute tasks, build repeatable workflows, and ability to judge the output critically.
• Clear communication with technical and non-technical audiences.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Three or more years of experience in a technical solar role: installation, commissioning, field service or site operations.
• Willingness to travel 10% to 20% of the time, including occasional site work at height.
• Valid driver’s licence.

COMPENSATION

• Base salary range: $85,000 to $100,000 CAD, commensurate with experience.
• Target annual bonus: 10% of base salary.
• Compensation will vary depending on experience and qualifications.
