About the role
The AMB System Engineer is responsible for system-level design and integration of Active Magnetic Bearings (AMB) in Flywheel Energy Storage Systems (FESS). The role focuses on 2 complementary aspects: 1- Simulate, predict and ensure the AMB fiufils its role in term of active guiding of the high speed rotor. 2- A deep understanding of AMB principles to define requirements for suppliers selection.
What you'll do
- Define system-level requirements (Force, operating frequency, speed, energy density, lifetime, losses) using state of the art simulation tools (rotor dynamics, Matlab-simulink co simulation ect.)
- Translate system-level requirements (Force, frequency, speed, energy density, lifetime, losses) into actionable AMB specifications (load capacity, stiffness, bandwidth, redundancy, control interfaces), and define clear technical specifications and interface requirements.
- Participate to technical communication and reviews with AMB suppliers; identify key parameters and hidden risks in supplier solutions (e.g., insufficient stability margins, overstated bandwidth, poor thermal design); avoid black-box dependency and maintain clear understanding of design assumptions and performance limits.
- Participate to system integration of AMB with rotor, motor, control system, and vacuum enclosure; resolve cross-domain coupling issues (rotor dynamics, control stability, structural vibration, thermal management), ensuring optimal system performance.
- Participate in system testing and commissioning; analyze vibration, losses, and stability issues; perform technical root cause analysis and correlation with Simulation models.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering; background in rotor dynamics or/and electromagnetics preferred.
- Experience in AMB, electric machines, or high-speed rotating systems; system integration or cross-functional experience preferred.
- Solid understanding of AMB fundamentals (force-current relationship, stiffness, control bandwidth) and rotor dynamics; ability to critically review and challenge supplier documentation (simulation reports, test data); basic modeling skills (FEA/MATLAB/Simulink/C/Python) for independent validation.
- Strong system-level thinking and engineering judgment; able to make decisions under uncertainty; effective communicator with both suppliers and internal teams
- Fluent in both written and spoken Chinese and English; able to use English as a working language for daily communication (including email correspondence with overseas colleagues, conference calls, and receiving foreign visitors).
