    Job description

    Middle School Theology & English Teacher 

    SUMMARY/PURPOSE: This position will cover two content areas- middle school Theology and English. The candidate must plan and implement innovative instructional practices that further the philosophy and goals of our school. The Teacher will also plan for both long and short-term instructional goals and will instruct and monitor student understanding and progress. Instruct through engaged, hands-on teaching and learning, utilize 21st Century teaching skills, possess good communication skills, and be able to work collaboratively with an instructional team. Teach Catholic identity, including faith formation and Catholic tradition. As well as, teach middle school English. Utilize test data to improve quality of instruction, as well as maintain accurate and current individual records of student growth and share this information regularly with parents, students and the principal. Must be an organized individual, a strong communicator with their peers and nurture a Christ-centered environment.

    EMPLOYER: Saint Gregory the Great Catholic School, Virginia Beach, VA 

    SUPERVISOR: Principal and Assistant Principal 

    WORKING RELATIONSHIPS: This position interacts with all school positions, families, and students

    • Collaborate with Principal/Assistant Principal in formulating and carrying out the mission and goal of the school 

    • Prepare daily/weekly lesson plans following the scope and sequence in accordance with Diocesan Consensus curriculum guidelines 

    • Collaborate and plan with the Principal/Assistant Principal teacher Religion expectations, requirements, and retreats 

    • Assess and evaluate students’ progress in written, oral, and enter into computer system, share progress with parents and principal/assistant principal

    • Use technology to assist in lesson preparation, instruction, and reporting 

    • Create and maintain a classroom environment conducive to learning 

    • Develop and maintain good working habits and discipline in the classroom

    • Supervise students during classes and at other times in the school day, including recess 

    • Plan and attend parent teacher conferences to discuss students’ progress and concerns with parents and administrators 

    • Carry out administrative duties or additional duties as assigned by the administration

    • Attend staff meetings and other training and development sessions, keep abreast 

    of current educational issues and trends through seminars, workshops, etc.  

    • Assist and organize activities such as field trips, school events, other class activities 

    • Attend school events to build relationships with school families

    WORKING CONDITIONS: This is a 10 month position; 7:15am - 3:15pm with extended times as needed; institutional holidays off 

    PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL: Annual appraisal will be done by the Principal/Assistant Principal in accordance with diocesan guidelines and this job description.

    FLSA STATUS: EXEMPT: This position is exempt according to the Fair Labor Standards Act. [See p. 23 of the Called to Work in Harmony: Personnel 

    Policies for Lay and Religious Employees.]

    SALARY AND BENEFITS: Per Diocesan guidelines and Called to Work in Harmony.

    QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree with emphasis in Theology or Religious Studies and English; Valid Virginia State Teaching License in middle school English; Classroom Experience teaching; General knowledge of curriculum and instruction ; Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior; Strong communications, public relations, and interpersonal skills; Successfully complete background screening; Successfully complete Diocesan sponsored child abuse awareness training, VIRTUS (additionally up to date VIRTUS monthly bulletins); Either a practicing Catholic or willingness to support instruction in Catholic teaching and tradition
