Position Summary

Why do clients pay very large amounts of money to hire a consulting or professional services firm, and how do they pick one amongst all of them?  We don’t bake a cake that they can see before they buy, or build a car they can take for a test drive. Yet, they tend to perceive value in consulting services, and reputation, trust, relationship building, and consistent high quality deliverables is key in their decision making.

We are looking for a Marketing Manager who is passionate about marketing professional services and is energized by the opportunity to shape Sapling’s brand as it grows from a boutique firm into a Canadian professional services powerhouse. Our next big milestone is to triple our business, and this role will be instrumental in achieving our goal.

We are a boutique consultancy that differentiates itself from the big firms with best-in-class work and a strong functional expertise, and we have no interest in diluting our brand. In this role, you will work on understanding our clients needs and services, and find creative ways to strengthen and differentiate our brand and capture a larger market share.  

The ideal candidate is a strategic and hands-on leader that brings significant marketing experience, strong business acumen, and experience within consulting, professional services, or high-performance services based businesses.

Responsibilities

Marketing strategy and planning

• Turn business goals into a plan that the marketing team can act on
• The plan will be updated periodically and it involves defining the audience, marketing campaigns, choosing the most suitable channels (conferences and events, social media, SEO, email marketing, paid advertisement, word-of-mouth), and deciding how to use resources to achieve the business goals

Brand, Content, and Campaign management

• Craft compelling, differentiated messaging and value propositions tailored to CEOs, CFOs, private equity partners, and investment bankers
• Manage our online, LinkedIn, and in-person presence, and promote our teams financial thought leadership
• Manage and support the creation of internal thought leadership that supports our current content strategy and use to move prospects through every stage of the pipeline
• Oversee and get involved in the execution of various campaigns, coordinate with the people involved, manage timelines and ensure the work stays within budget
• Monitor campaign results and make changes based on data insights to improve results
• Work with the sales team to execute a keep warm strategy for our lead and customer base so that when our services are needed, we are who they think of first

Market and customer research

• Conduct market research and use customer data, competitor activity and previous campaign results to understand demand, customer needs, and make better decisions
• Use research to understand whether customers are losing interest, what they value most, or where the buying experience creates friction, to assist the company to improve the customer experience

Team and stakeholder leadership

• Manage performance and mentor a Marketing Analyst and marketing interns/co-ops
• Manage external vendor relationships: PR, website management and digital marketing, partnering with professional associations
• Collaborate with Sapling leadership, consulting, sales, and administrative team to accomplish Sapling’s growth goals
• As the company grows work on building a larger high-performing marketing team

Budget management

• Ensure available marketing budget is used effectively. Decide budget allocation across campaigns and channels and monitor spending as it progresses
• Plan and manage budget based on results as they are coming in, to maximize returns across campaigns and channels

Performance measurement

• Collect and analyze results data to measure performance against original goals, and use lessons to improve results on current and future initiatives
• Define the right metrics to measure objectives, a campaign focused on lead generation might be assessed through qualified leads and conversion rates, while a sales campaign may place more weight on revenue and return on investment

Skills & Qualifications

• 5+ years of prior marketing experience, with a strong preference for candidates with experience in consulting, professional services settings, or B2B services
• Understanding a B2B buyer journeys, demand generation, lead nurturing, and conversion optimization
• Proven ability to develop sharp messaging and positioning for complex, multi-stakeholders services
• Strong track record for managing people, projects, and budgets with successful measurable outcomes
• A self-starter with high creative standards who takes ownership and is comfortable working in a high-performance, fast-paced environment
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Strong understanding of and experience using CRM systems, marketing automation platforms, and digital analytics
