Overview
The MarkLogic Developer is responsible for the development, maintenance, and operational support of enterprise MarkLogic database platforms supporting content-centric and metadata-driven applications. This role builds and supports XML/JSON-based data models, semantic data integrations, and search-driven solutions using MarkLogic, following architecture and governance standards established by senior engineering staff. The MarkLogic Developer helps ensure performance, scalability, and data integrity across environments while supporting compliance, governance, and secure data access practices, and works closely with senior engineers, software engineering, data governance, and compliance stakeholders to support secure, high-availability NoSQL platforms and enterprise search, metadata management, and data harmonization initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain MarkLogic data models, including XML, JSON, and semantic (triple) data structures, in accordance with established architecture standards.
- Build and optimize XQuery and SPARQL queries for search, ingestion, and transformation workflows.
- Support ingestion pipelines, data harmonization flows, and metadata enrichment processes.
- Assist with configuration and maintenance of MarkLogic clusters, including forests, databases, and indexes, under the direction of senior engineering staff.
- Monitor system performance and support optimization efforts, including indexing strategies, search relevance tuning, and query efficiency.
- Support capacity planning and provide input on high availability, replication, and disaster recovery configurations within MarkLogic.
- Follow established standards for data modeling, metadata, taxonomy, and content structure governance.
- Collaborate with application engineers and architects to support API-driven and search-first architectures leveraging MarkLogic.
- Participate in database and content deployment pipelines, including version control, CI/CD integration, and automated promotion across environments.
- Support compliance with SOC 2, ISO 27001, and applicable standards by implementing RBAC, compartmentalization, encryption, and audit logging within MarkLogic.
- Support implementation of DataOps practices, including Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC), Configuration-as-Code (CaC), and Data-as-Code (DaC), for MarkLogic environments.
- Contribute to enterprise data governance initiatives, including lineage, taxonomy alignment, and stewardship practices.
- Produce documentation including data flow diagrams, runbooks, and operational procedures.

Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a closely related technical field. (Preferred)
- Relevant certifications in NoSQL, MarkLogic, or data engineering. (Preferred)
Experience:
- 2+ years of experience in database engineering or data platform engineering roles. (Required)
- 1+ years of hands-on experience with MarkLogic Server. (Required)
- Experience with document-oriented, metadata-driven, or semantic data platforms. (Preferred)
- Experience with:
- XQuery and/or Server-Side JavaScript (SJS)
- MarkLogic indexing, search configuration, and query optimization
- Data ingestion frameworks (MLCP, Data Hub Framework, or equivalent)
- Experience implementing or supporting security controls including RBAC, element-level permissions, and encryption. (Required)
- Experience working in CI/CD environments with automated deployment pipelines. (Preferred)
- Experience using Git or other version control systems. (Preferred)
- Exposure to DataOps or DevOps practices and tooling. (Preferred)
- Experience with REST APIs, search APIs, and integration patterns involving MarkLogic. (Preferred)
- Experience supporting compliance frameworks such as SOC 2 or ISO 27001. (Preferred)
- Experience with cloud-hosted MarkLogic deployments (Azure). (Preferred)
- Familiarity with relational databases and hybrid architectures. (Preferred)
