The Department of Urology in the School of Medicine at Stanford University is seeking a highly energetic, talented, proactive, and self-motivated Laboratory Services Manager 1 to join our growing team. This hands-on role involves overseeing the overall daily operations of laboratory facilities located at 3172 Porter Drive at Stanford Research Park, Always M316 at the main Palo Alto campus, as well as future expansions of departmental laboratory space.
Key Responsibilities:
You will direct staff supporting laboratory operations and complex research activities, including lab supply inventory management, equipment maintenance, and new equipment procurement. As a critical point of contact for lab personnel, you will field service requests, triage and assign tasks, provide training on complex analytical techniques and specimen bank management, and help maintain a culture of safety and compliance.
You will either directly perform or oversee the following tasks:
Fresh tissue acquisition from operating rooms and clinics
Processing, embedding, and sectioning fresh and frozen tissue using specialized equipment (Leica microtome, cryostat, paraffin embedding machine)
Performing detailed immunohistochemistry on paraffin-embedded and frozen sections
Characterizing patient-derived xenografts using various antibody platforms and sophisticated techniques
Preparing tissue cores and precise slices from fresh OR tissues using a Krumdieck tissue slicer for implantation into mice (renal capsule) and developing renal cell culture cell lines
Conducting animal experiments (tissue slice grafts, drug treatment via oral gavage)
Executing complex lab experiments and maintaining detailed records to gather research data
Processing serum and urine samples, including centrifugation, aliquoting, and nucleic acid extraction.
Specimen Bank Management:
You will apply thorough knowledge of research principles, concepts, and methods to manage the specimen bank, including:
Developing and maintaining clinical databases for prostate, kidney, bladder cancer, and benign urological diseases
Managing PSA (prostate-specific antigen) serum bank and prostate, bladder, and kidney cancer frozen tissue bank
Assisting in creating and renewing Institutional Review Board (IRB)-approved protocols for human sample use in research
Maintaining comprehensive records of human tissue and serum sample use for reporting purposes
Serving as a technical resource for departmental research staff and external network collaborators
This is a full-time, on-site role that reports to the following current faculty and future recruits:
The Brooks O’Brien Urology Research Center and Brooks Center for Urologic Genomics focuses on development of molecular biomarkers that can guide urologic therapy. The role of this position is to provide highly skilled technical support for the research activities of the Brooks laboratory. The individual is primarily responsible for overseeing all activities related to acquisition, storage and use of human materials, including tissues and serum.
The Dobberfuhl laboratory basic science and clinical translational research focus includes Animal models of voiding dysfunction and IC/BPS, Pelvic floor ischemia and effect of estrogen on lower urinary tract, Urinary biomarkers and molecular mechanisms implicated in lower urinary tract dysfunction (WHSDM).
The Liao laboratory focuses on the development of enhanced endoscopic imaging technologies (e.g. fluorescence, endomicroscopy, molecular imaging, computer vision, and artificial intelligence) to improve bladder tumor detection and resection and molecular diagnostics for bacterial infections to direct evidence-based utilization of antibiotics in order to curtail the proliferation of multidrug resistant pathogens often prescribed for urinary tract infections. As well as identification and validation of urine-based biomarkers to inform bladder cancer diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment response.
The Lu Laboratory focuses on developing and integrating cutting-edge technologies in biomedical imaging, artificial intelligence, and spatial omics to decipher and predict how cells and tissues are spatially organized and orchestrated in their native tissue microenvironment and how this organization regulates biological function, disease progression, and response to therapy.
The Ge Laboratory focuses on studying chitosan's mechanism of action and using it to develop a tunable, non-inflammatory model of bladder injury and repair. Impaired urothelial regeneration is a central factor in the persistence of urologic conditions such as recurrent urinary tract infections and interstitial cystitis, which affect millions of individuals and cause significant morbidity and diminished quality of life. In parallel, she investigates chitosan’s therapeutic role in enhancing urothelial healing and interrupting the cycle of chronic injury that drives these debilitating conditions.
The Prado Laboratory focuses on basic, translational, and clinical research in bladder cancer, urothelial cell development and differentiation, direct conversion of fibroblasts to bladder urothelial progenitor cells for regeneration or replacement of the bladder urothelium for benign and malignant disorders of the urothelium.
