Controls Specialist

The Opportunity

The Controls Specialist is responsible for the startup, commissioning, configuration, and troubleshooting of Building Automation Systems (BAS) for commercial HVAC projects.  This role operates independently on standard systems and plays a critical role in ensuring systems are installed, programmed, and functioning according to design specifications.  The Controls Specialist serves as a key contributor to project execution, supporting system performance, customer satisfaction, and overall project quality while continuing to build technical expertise in controls systems and integration.

Responsibilities

System Startup & Commissioning:

• Perform end-to-end I/O verification and system startup activities.
• Execute commissioning processes to ensure systems meet design intent and performance requirements.
• Complete calibrations, system checks, and commissioning documentation.
• Support third-party commissioning and validation efforts.

Programming & Configuration:

• Configure and program DDC controllers and BAS interfaces.
• Implement and troubleshoot graphical user interfaces (GUI).
• Modify sequences of operation and control logic as needed.
• Support integration of HVAC systems including VAVs, AHUs, chillers, and related equipment.

Troubleshooting & Technical Execution:

• Diagnose and resolve hardware, software, and network-related issues.
• Troubleshoot IP and RS-485 communication networks.
• Interpret control drawings, wiring diagrams, and sequences of operation.
• Ensure systems operate efficiently, reliably, and in alignment with project requirements.

Documentation & Quality:

• Maintain accurate job documentation, including redlines and as-built updates.
• Ensure all work aligns with company standards, project specifications, and best practices.
• Identify and communicate system or design issues impacting performance or delivery.

Customer &Team Collaboration:

• Interface with project managers, engineers, and customers to support project execution.
• Communicate system status, issues, and resolutions clearly and professionally.
• Support and guide Controls Support Specialists and junior team members.
• Contribute to a team environment focused on quality, accountability, and continuous improvement.

The Required Profile

• Working knowledge of DDC controls and BAS platforms.
• Basic to intermediate electrical troubleshooting skills.
• Ability to reach and interpret engineered documents, including wiring diagrams and sequences.
• Understanding of HVAC systems and control applications.
• Knowledge of IP networking and communication protocols preferred.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage assigned tasks and projects.
• 1-4 years of Building Automation Systems (BAS) or related controls experience.
• High School Diploma required.
• Technical degree, certification, or relevant trade experience preferred.

Work Environment

This position operates primarily in field environments, including construction sites, customer facilities, and mechanical rooms. Work conditions may include exposure to varying temperatures, noise levels, and industrial environments.  The role requires close collaboration with field teams, engineering, and project management.

Physical Demands

• Regularly required to stand, walk, and navigate active job sites for extended periods.
• Frequent use of hands and fingers to operate tools, equipment, and computer systems.
• Ability to climb ladders, access rooftops, and work within mechanical rooms or confined spaces.
• Must be able to lift and carry materials or equipment up to 25 – 50 pounds as needed.
• Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, and reach to inspect, troubleshoot, or support installation of control systems.
• Visual acuity required to read technical documents, wiring diagrams, and digital displays.
• May require extended periods of driving to and from job sites and customer locations.
