Controls Retrofit Engineer

The Controls Retrofit Engineer I/II is responsible for leading complex retrofit engineering projects including control system design, control panel engineering, PLC, HMI, and robotics programming, and providing site start-up support of material-handling equipment and automation equipment for the material handling, manufacturing, and logistics industries.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Serves as subject matter expert on retrofit control systems and electrical engineering principles and provides expert knowledge and guidance to colleagues as needed.
• Provides control systems design technical leadership in a matrixed environment, ensuring on-time schedule, performance, project milestones, customer deliverables, and compliance with regulations and standards.
• Applies electrical engineering principles to analyze, propose, design, program, test and troubleshoot control systems associated within complex material handling systems.
• Reviews contract documentation and customer specifications and creates equipment specifications and detailed design documentation for the development of appropriate control solutions.
• Supports realization team on project installation, commissioning and testing of control systems, traveling frequently as required.
• Develops technical documentation including control system specifications and engineering procedures and assists with creation of user manuals.
• Frequently interacts with customers and suppliers.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent technical degree, or equivalent work experience.

Experience: Minimum of six (6) years of controls engineering experience, preferably in a material handling, industrial, or manufacturing environment. Several years of retrofit experience preferred. 

Travel: 30 – 40% of travel as required.

Skills & Abilities

• Advanced PLC ladder logic and programming and proficiency in Siemens, Rockwell and Allen Bradley PLCs.
• Advanced understanding of fieldbus systems and I/O equipment, e.g., Profibus, Profinet, ASi, TCP/IP.
• Advanced understanding of other controls automation-related equipment, e.g. Bar code scanners, HMIs, Variable frequency drives.
• Knowledgeable on AC drives, both open & closed loop.
• Experience in Ethernet IP network design and machine safety a plus.
• Advanced Microsoft Office skills including Word, PowerPoint, & Excel.
• Excellent documentation and technical writing for product manuals, work instructions, and troubleshooting.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to remain stationary at a desk for prolonged periods of time.
• Ability to go to site frequently and move safely around industrial and/or warehouse environment.
• Ability to lift and carry supplies up to 25 pounds at a time. 
• Ability to operate computers, tablets, phones, and other electronic devices. 
• Ability to communicate with others verbally and in writing, on a frequent basis. 
• Ability to tolerate exposure to job site temperature fluctuations due to seasonal weather in geographic region.
