Audience Producer

The City Reporter is seeking an entrepreneurial and creative Audience Producer to execute on our ambitious strategy to introduce our reporting to new people and platforms and deepen our engagement with New Yorkers.

The City Reporter (formerly THE CITY) is New York City’s award-winning nonprofit, nonpartisan local news organization. Working across all five boroughs, our stellar journalists bring diverse skills and backgrounds to the task of covering New York’s neighborhoods, holding the powerful to account and making sense of the greatest city in the world.

The City Reporter’s investigative reporting has resulted in criminal indictments, political resignations and ethics inquiries. It has inspired new laws, influenced budget choices and reversed injustices. The City Reporter’s explanatory journalism has helped hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers to vote, keep their apartments warm, stay safe in dangerous weather and access public assistance.

The Position

The City Reporter’s Audience Producer will be responsible for getting our award-winning reporting in front of new audiences and for deepening our engagement with New Yorkers. Shooting and editing social video will be a central part of this job, along with monitoring audience metrics, maintaining multiple social media accounts, experimenting with the ways we can reach new people and assisting the newsroom as it expands the ways we promote and deliver our work.

Responsibilities

• Manage The City Reporter’s social media accounts on multiple platforms on a daily basis.
• Produce 1-3 short-form videos a week. These may be based on The City Reporter’s text articles or originated as social-first videos. This will include brainstorming, scripting, filming and editing.
• Work with reporters and editors to source footage including from social media, original shoots and partner outlets.
• Track our audience performance, including metrics such as page views, newsletter subscribers, reach on social media, listeners to our podcast and more.
• Be a liaison to our publishing partners and community groups who have high interest in The City Reporter’s work.
• Manage daily relationships with third-party publishing partners such as Apple News.
• Assist as needed with planning, promoting and documenting City Reporter events.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of newsroom experience, with most of that time spent doing audience and video production.
• Experience conceiving of, filming and editing videos created for social media.
• Ability to produce immaculate copy for social media platforms with minimum supervision.
• Ability to collaborate and communicate with other editors and reporters.
• Strong news judgment and deep familiarity with New York City.
• Ability to thrive in fast and ever-changing environments and a passion for experimenting with new formats.

Compensation and Benefits

• $80,000 - $90,000
