First Year Committee Chair

Main Responsibilities

Hire and lead the CUS First Year Committee, fostering a collaborative and enthusiastic team environment

Plan and execute engaging first-year events that create a welcoming space for students to connect, have fun, and grow both personally and professionally

Facilitate weekly Committee meetings and hold individual check-ins with Committee members as needed to provide support, align on responsibilities, and keep initiatives on track

Collaborate with the CUS VP and AVP of Internal Affairs through bi-weekly syncs to align on priorities and share updates

Coordinate interfaculty first-year events that help students connect with peers across UBC faculties and build a broader university community

Assist organizing Specialization Night in collaboration with CUS, helping first-year students explore Sauder’s specialization options and make informed decisions about their academic journey

Qualifications

First-year student at the UBC Sauder School of Business

Passionate about building community and creating engaging experiences for fellow students

Strong leadership skills and the ability to motivate, support, and collaborate with peers

Comfortable sharing ideas, taking initiative, and bringing new  event concepts to life

Ability to build relationships and work effectively with external organizations and stakeholders

Previous event planning, leadership, or community-building experience is an asset

Anticipated Learning Outcomes

The First Year Committee Chair will have the opportunity to strengthen their leadership skills through hands-on experience, mentorship, and collaboration with CUS and external stakeholders. Throughout the role, the Chair will also develop skills in:

Event planning and execution, from ideation and coordination to successful delivery

Adaptability and problem-solving, learning to navigate challenges and bring ideas to life

Professional communication and collaboration, working with peers, CUS teams, and external stakeholders

Team leadership and delegation, building experience in motivating and supporting a team
