Position: Quality Technician I
Location: Morristown, TN
Shift: Rotating 8-Hour Shifts
Pay Rate: $21.74/hour

Summary Description

The Quality Technician I is responsible for helping ensure that internal and customer quality specifications and expectations are consistently met through the inspection, testing, and evaluation of raw materials and finished products.

Reporting to the Quality Manager, this position performs laboratory and production-floor quality testing, evaluates print and material characteristics, maintains accurate quality records, prepares customer documentation, and works closely with Production and other team members to identify and address product-quality concerns.

Internal Applicants: Candidates must have no disciplinary action beyond a formal discussion within the past 180 days and no more than one formal discussion during that period.

What You’ll Be Doing

Quality Inspection & Testing

• Inspect and grade finished converted structures for color, registration, ink adhesion, physical dimensions, and other established quality requirements.
• Use a lab sealer to prepare heat and cohesive seals for testing.
• Use a tensile tester to evaluate heat seals, cohesive seals, and lamination bond strengths.
• Use analytical balances to weigh raw and finished materials.
• Use X-Rite equipment to test the opacity of finished materials.
• Perform standard procedures for organoleptic evaluation of finished materials.
• Use a gas chromatograph and integrator to perform headspace analysis for solvent retention in flexible packaging.
• Use a Thwing-Albert COF tester to analyze the coefficient of friction of substrates.
• Operate a densitometer, X-Rite computer, and associated software programs to evaluate color quality.
• Perform basic routine maintenance on laboratory equipment.

Production & Quality Assurance Support

• Perform required Quality Assurance Table functions, including cutting samples, checking repeat, identifying and documenting print defects, and notifying appropriate personnel.
• Approve color standards for on-target color and defect-free samples before submission to customers.
• Assist with analyzing and troubleshooting product-quality concerns.
• Prepare job boards, color standard booklets, and other quality-related materials.
• Support Production and other departments by communicating quality concerns and test results in a timely manner.
• Use experience and product history to make appropriate quality-related judgment calls.
• Work independently and collaboratively with others to support quality requirements.
• Demonstrate a commitment to total quality and continuous improvement.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and professional work area.

Documentation & Customer Support

• Maintain accurate records and calculate statistics related to laboratory testing and quality procedures.
• Complete and submit all required Certificates of Analysis (COAs) to customers.
• Create accurate and professional quality documentation, including customer letters, run-data forms, end-of-job summaries, color-standard submissions, and other required documents.
• Operate and update software applications, including databases, spreadsheets, and word-processing programs.
• Maintain logs and records in an accurate, legible, and timely manner.
• Perform additional quality-related duties as assigned.
• Work overtime as required to support business and production needs.

• High school diploma or GED preferred but not required. Candidates who demonstrate the necessary manufacturing experience and the required literacy, numeracy, and technical skills will be considered regardless of educational background.
