Overview
The New York Medical College (NYMC) School of Medicine (SOM) academic Department Chair (chair) is a highly visible leader who is charged with furthering the shared goals and mission of the academic health center that elevates the department to a position of academic and professional eminence. The chair will have the responsibility of assuring delivery of the highest quality clinical services, overseeing residency training program(s), supporting the student teaching programs of NYMC SOM, and providing opportunities for the professional advancement and academic productivity of the department's faculty members including growing the department's clinical and translational biomedical research portfolio. The chair reports directly to the Dean of the SOM.
Responsibilities
- Establish a vision for the department and effectively communicate how it contributes to the success of individual faculty, the SOM, the institution, and the medical profession; work collaboratively with institutional leadership and colleagues to lead an academic department that will support the SOM's strategic goal of being nationally recognized for education, research, and clinical care; collaborate with the SOM and its affiliated teaching hospitals to achieve the SOM strategic goal of reputation growth; recruit, retain, and develop talented faculty to fulfill the needs and mission of the SOM.
- Provide leadership to ensure that department's faculty members develop their academic careers and are active participants in the NYMC SOM community; have a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities, including SOM faculty governance, and opportunities for service and participation in the SOM; conduct faculty performance reviews in accordance with SOM policy and procedures; encourage and support faculty promotion and/or tenure through the provision of feedback and evaluation procedures in accordance with SOM policy and procedures.
- Demonstrate innovation and scholarship, significant experience in the practice and management of clinical medicine, a record of funded basic, translational, or clinical research and demonstrated ability to balance duties in education, research, administration, and clinical care; lead the department toward developing a robust translational research program that addresses the bench-to-bedside paradigm through partnerships and collaborations; accountable for departmental excellence in the mission of education & training, research, and clinical care, with encouragement and emphasis of interdisciplinary activities where appropriate.
- Identify and support the professional development needs of students, residents/fellows, other health professionals, staff, faculty, and community physicians as relates to departmental goals and the SOM mission.
- Work collaboratively with hospital leaders to meet the SOM M.D. Degree Program needs for medical student clinical experiences; assure an optimum learning environment; remain clinically active in order to serve as a role model to learners, while shaping the future of clinical care, research, and teaching in the department.
- As applicable, ensure and support a fully accredited NYMC-sponsored graduate medical education program that is supported by a strong and professional teaching faculty; one that is welcoming to learners and is overseen by knowledgeable program directors that represent and uphold NYMC SOM's educational mission, and in concurrence with the NYMC Designated Institutional Official.
- Promote the mission of the department through effective management of departmental clinical operations by assuring the quality, availability, and appropriateness of clinical services provided by department faculty in concert with the mission and goals of NYMC SOM.
- Encourage and support diversity among the department's constituents, creating an environment of professionalism, respect, tolerance, acceptance, and belonging.
- Assure equitable salary and academic work conditions for department faculty and facilitate their continuing professional development; provide compensation information for full time faculty members of the department to complete national benchmarking surveys for the Association of Academic Medical Centers, as requested by SOM officials.
- Manage department staff, finances, and resources effectively and efficiently, in accord with the SOM's budget and College policies; ensure that the Department remains current with all payments to NYMC for services and benefits provided by the SOM, including CME fees, Faculty Deans Dues, charges for the support of residents conducting research, fees for biostatistical support services for research, etc., as applicable.
- Recognize and manage potential conflicts-of-commitment for faculty members working within the academic health centers including WMCHealth Network and the SOM's other affiliate clinical sites.
- Serve as an advisor to the Dean of the SOM; serve as a member of the NYMC SOM Dean's Chairs Committee.
- Understand the external environments of healthcare, education, and research; develop relevant measures/metrics to evaluate department outcomes; participate in the Dean's annual chair performance evaluation procedures in addition to external review by chairs and/or eminent scholars from other institutions every five (5) years as requested.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Dean of the SOM.
Qualifications
- M.D., M.D./Ph.D., or D.O. degree.
- Board certified/eligible in area of specialization as applicable
- Eligible for a NYMC faculty appointment at senior rank (e.g. associate professor, professor).
- Active New York State Medical License/eligible to obtain.
- Computer literacy in PC and Mac-based software applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and MS Office Suite; other software specific to clinical and/or research specialization as needed.
- Visible clinical experience record and reputation as an outstanding clinician.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and build academic programs in clinical pediatrics, education, and research.
- Successful track record of leadership and results within an academic health center or complex healthcare system.
- Experience in educational leadership highly desirable.
- Evidence of significant scholarly activities.
