Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Medical or Specialty Director, the Provider delivers culturally competent, comprehensive healthcare services as part of Unity Health Care's Department of Corrections program. The Provider is responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of physical and behavioral health conditions, patient counseling and education, preventive care, and continued comprehensive healthcare.
This position requires a high degree of clinical knowledge, professional judgment, and collaboration to provide safe, high-quality, patient-centered care within the correctional healthcare environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Obtain patient clinical histories and conduct appropriate physical examinations and assessments.
- Determine necessary diagnostic and screening tests and interpret results.
- Diagnose and treat acute and chronic health conditions and develop appropriate treatment plans.
- Provide preventive health maintenance, patient education, and counseling.
- Coordinate referrals to hospitals, specialists, social services, and other healthcare providers when necessary.
- Document patient encounters accurately and in a timely manner within the medical record.
- Provide culturally competent, high-quality healthcare to patients within the Department of Corrections.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and identify opportunities to improve patient care.
- Review and implement clinical best practices and maintain required continuing medical education.
- Maintain a culture of safety and participate in problem-solving and improvement processes.
- Collaborate with medical leadership, nursing staff, behavioral health professionals, and other members of the healthcare team.
- Communicate respectfully with patients, actively listen to concerns, and clearly explain treatment recommendations.
- Respond to patient concerns, test results, and other clinical needs in a timely manner.
- Maintain clinical privileges and all required professional credentials.
- Participate in team, departmental, and organization-wide meetings.
- Participate in student and resident education when requested by the Medical Director.
- Monitor productivity and work collaboratively with leadership to improve workflow, efficiency, and patient access.
- Complete clinical documentation within established timeframes.
- Participate in on-call, evening, and weekend coverage as required.
- Serve on committees as requested by the Medical Director or Chief Medical Officer.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Current District of Columbia professional license.
- Current DC Controlled Substance Registration (CDS) and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration, if serving as a prescribing provider.
- Graduate of an accredited school of medicine, nurse practitioner program, physician assistant program, or other relevant professional school.
- Board eligible, board certified, or appropriately licensed in the applicable specialty.
- Must become board certified/licensed within one year of hire, if applicable.
- Must be willing to participate in regular on-call rotation.
- Must be available for evening and weekend sessions when needed to provide patient coverage.
