Full time starting salary is normally in the range £47,389 to £56,535 with potential progression once in post to £63,606

Role Summary
The role of the post is to lead a team of trial management staff responsible for administration of a portfolio of clinical trial research projects. The Team Leader will assist the Trials Unit Directors in developing and maintaining the trials portfolio, promoting the CRCTU’s activities at a (inter)national level. They will oversee the administration of their clinical trials portfolio from concept to completion, taking an active role in providing specialist trial management advice, contributing to the design and costing of new trial proposals, preparing grant applications, coordinating trials (when necessary) and contributing to the presentation and publication of results. They will be responsible for ensuring that the team’s portfolio of trials is conducted according to applicable regulations and quality standards. They will be responsible for all aspects of staff management and will plan and monitor team finance and staff resource. They will contribute to the operation of the CRCTU by representing the team on the Operational Management Committee and take an active role in developing the CRCTU’s quality management system.

Planning and organising
The post-holder is responsible for a portfolio of clinical research projects and the staff working on them within the CRCTU, School of Medical Sciences.
The post-holder will be responsible for planning, organising and prioritising their own workload. The post-holder will also be involved in planning the work of team members. They will need to be adaptive as issues may arise on a day-to-day basis in the management of a project which require their immediate attention.
Investigators may approach the post-holder directly regarding new projects or these may be allocated to the post-holder at resource allocation meetings. Careful and long term planning will be required to manage the portfolio of projects. Clinical trials can last for 10+ years and the post-holder will be responsible for planning resource in order to ensure that milestones are met. Not to do so could cause reputational damage to the CRCTU. The post-holder will need to carefully prioritise work on incoming projects so as not to compromise existing ones.
Problem solving and decision making
i) without reference to others
The post-holder would be expected to solve the vast majority of day-to-day trial related research problems without reference to others. This may involve the implementation of new trial management initiatives and appropriate delegation of duties either internally within the CRCTU, or externally amongst all research sites. They would also be expected to deal with staffing issues.
(ii) after consulting others
The post-holder would be expected to consult with the Trial Management Group before implementing changes to the research protocols. They would be expected to consult the CRCTU Director of Operations and Quality Management Team Leader before implementing changes to projects which may divert from the quality management system or with regard to corrective actions following a Serious Breach. They should also consult with the CRCTU Director of Operations with regard to major staffing issues or incidents which represent a risk to the CRCTU or the University.
iii) or that would be referred to someone else
Problems of a clinical nature should be referred to the Chief Investigator of the trial unless that responsibility has been delegated to another individual. Problems encountered of a global nature should be referred to the CRCTU Director of Operations for remedial action.
Internal and external relationships
Within University of Birmingham
The post-holder will be required to interact and coordinate work with University departments (Research Governance, Research Contracts, MDS Finance and MDS Research and Knowledge transfer) key to the delivery of clinical research in order to ensure the speedy delivery of the team’s clinical trials portfolio.
Pharmaceutical Companies and Funding Bodies
The post-holder will be required to negotiate with Pharmaceutical Companies regarding funding, drug supply and contractual agreements. They will also be required to effectively communicate with other funding bodies for example negotiating budgets and carry-over of funding.
Professors & Consultants in Oncology and other medical personnel
The post-holder must be able to clearly explain scientific background, clinical, practical and financial aspects of research projects effectively.
Statisticians /Trial Methodologists
The post-holder will be required to interact and work closely with Statisticians /Trial Methodologists both within the University and external Institutions to ensure the efficient development and delivery of the team’s clinical trials portfolio.
Patients and Family Members
The post-holder must be able to communicate with patients and family members, answering queries they may have in a way appropriate to their level of understanding. They will write Patient Information Sheets and other lay documentation that must be easy for the layperson to understand and that comply with current ethical guidelines.
Service Providers and Suppliers
Be able to effectively negotiate with service providers and suppliers.
Staff Members
The post-holder will be required to communicate clearly and effectively with staff members and may at times be required to hold difficult conversations regarding attendance, performance and other staffing issues. They will also be involved in training staff and must therefore be able to mentor, coach, and hold small teaching sessions.
