    Organization's Summary Statement:

    Reporting to the Manager of Archives and Library Collections, the Archivist is primarily responsible for surveying, transferring, inventorying, accessioning, developing an arrangement proposal, and creating access for newly acquired collections at The David C. Driskell Center, including the Crumpler Collection, Robert L. Hall Collection, Lewis Tanner Moore Collection, Where We At Black Women Artists Archives, and the Dindga McCannon Archives. The Archivist will catalog those five collections in ArchivesSpace, and create finding aids. The Archivist will also manage outsourced digitization of audiovisual and bound materials in three of those collections (prioritized for digitization by volume of material and assessed potential for scholarly impact). The  Archivist helps to train and supervise a small group of graduate student interns who assist with processing tasks (inventorying, rehousing of materials, and creating folders). The Archivist also assists other Archives staff in handling onsite and remote reference requests, especially those related to the collections listed above, and the Digital Discovery Developer, in creating access to collections via a new webpage. The Archivist also helps develop marketing materials for The Driskell Center Archives (press releases, social media posts). This position is funded by the Getty Foundation.

    Physical Demands:

    Typical office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards. Sedentary work which involves remaining in place for long periods. The office setting has light to moderate noise. This position occasionally requires some walking to different locations on campus for meetings.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library Science or equivalent graduate degree in archive administration from an accredited college/university
    Experience with artist archives.
    Experience with ArchiveSpace platform.
    Knowledge of African-American art history.

    Duties & Responsibilities:

    1. (65%) Responsible for archival processing of the  Robert L. Hall Collection, Lewis Tanner Moore Collection, Where We At Black Women Artists Archives, and the Dindga McCannon Archives. This may include performing basic inventories; identifying preservation risks and sensitive material (PII); developing arrangement plans (organization of collections into series and subseries) to make the collections accessible to scholars and the broader public; rehousing materials according to those plans; developing finding aids; and cataloging those items in ArchivesSpace; and performing all these activities according to archival best practices. Manages outsourced digitization of audiovisual and bound materials in three collections, the Crumpler Collection, Where We At Black Women Artists Archives, and the Dindga McCannon Archives.

    2. (15%) Handles reference requests related to the Robert L. Hall Collection, Lewis Tanner Moore Collection, Where We At Black Women Artists Archives, and the Dindga McCannon Archives. Assists the Senior Archivist with presentations to classes and leading tours of the Archives.

    3. (10%) Assists with appraisal and accessioning of new archival collections. This could include travel to appraise collections, secure donations, and prepare materials for transfer to The Driskell Center.

    4. (5%) Assists with all grant-related activities, including development of grant proposal narratives and budgets, as well as reporting to grant funders

    5. (5%) Assists with developing workflows and planning related to archival processing (with other staff).

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
    Experience: Three (3) years of professional experience, including database management or project management in a research or academic library.
    Other: Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

    Knowledge of archival and records management principles and practices.
    Knowledge of library and archives systems, procedures, and standards.
    Skill in oral and written communication.
    Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws.
    Ability to multitask while demonstrating a commitment to customer service.
