NAVAIDS Technician - Balad (USN)

Who You Are:

Seeking a full-time MET-NAVAIDS Technician in Iraq, supporting Navigational Aids (NAVAIDS), Air Traffic Control and Landing Systems (ATCALS), meteorological and runway visual range systems at Martyr Brigadier General Ali Flaih Air Base (Balad). This position performs hands-on inspection, preventive and corrective maintenance, troubleshooting, alignment, calibration, repair, operational verification and restoration of airfield navigation, landing, weather and associated electronic systems supporting Iraqi F-16 flight operations.

What You'll Do:

• Oversight of the maintenance, repair, calibration, alignment and support services for assigned NAVAIDS, ATCALS, MET and RVR systems, including management of preventive and corrective maintenance activities and maintenance records.

• Perform advanced fault isolation and troubleshooting of ILS/localizer/glideslope, VOR, TACAN, DME, NDB, meteorological observing systems, AWOS/RVR, associated communications, monitoring, power, control and display equipment.

• Conduct routine and unscheduled inspections, operational checks, tuning, alignment, adjustment, calibration and repair of electronic, electrical and related mechanical assemblies and subassemblies.

• Read and interpret Technical Orders, OEM manuals, schematics, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, blueprints, technical specifications and maintenance procedures.

• Use standard and specialized test equipment, including digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, RF test sets, power meters and OEM/NAVAIDS diagnostic equipment and software.

• Support flight inspection, ground checks and certification activities by making real-time equipment adjustments and documenting system performance and discrepancies.

• Maintain accurate equipment status, outage/restoration, preventive maintenance, calibration, inspection, maintenance and parts records; document all work performed in accordance with program and customer requirements.

• Coordinate equipment outages, restoration-to-service actions and technical status with Airfield Management Operations, Tower/RAPCON, AOG leadership and Iraqi Air Force counterparts.

• Ensure maintenance is performed in accordance with applicable FAA, ICAO, DoD, Technical Order, OEM and site-specific safety and operational requirements.

• Support training and knowledge transfer to assigned technicians and stakeholders, including safe work practices, LOTO and system-specific maintenance procedures.

• Maintain an accurate inventory of assigned tools, test equipment, spare parts, repair parts and technical publications required to support the mission.

• Perform other duties as assigned in support of 24/7 airfield operations and mission readiness.

Required Qualifications:

• Must be a U.S. Citizen.

• Must have strong verbal and written English communication skills and be able to operate a variety of computer programs.

• Must have the ability to speak, read and write English fluently.

• Must maintain a valid driver's license from the home country with validity for at least 12 months from on-site employment date.

• Must maintain a valid passport from the home country with validity for at least 12 months from the on-site employment date.

• Must satisfy and maintain all medical screening requirements for deployment to Iraq and remote/contingency duty locations.

• Must be able to obtain and maintain authorization for entry onto U.S. military installations and applicable Iraqi military facilities.

• Must be able to perform the essential physical functions of the position in an austere, expeditionary environment.

• Must be available to support shift work, call-out response, emergency restoration activities and extended-hours operations when mission requirements dictate.

Additional Required Qualifications:

• Minimum of four (4) years of hands-on NAVAIDS, MET-NAV, ATCALS, avionics, RF/electronics or closely related maintenance experience; direct airfield NAVAIDS experience is required.

• Formal military technical school, FAA/DoD technical training, Associate degree, technical certificate, or equivalent documented training in NAVAIDS, MET-NAV, ATCALS, avionics, electronics, communications, RF systems or electrical systems.

• Demonstrated hands-on experience maintaining, troubleshooting, aligning, calibrating and restoring ILS, VOR, TACAN, DME and NDB systems. Experience must include fault isolation to the line-replaceable-unit, module, assembly or component level as appropriate to the system.

• Demonstrated experience with meteorological/weather systems and runway visual range systems, including field sensors, transmitter/receiver assemblies, data collection units, processing/display equipment and associated power/surge protection components.

• Advanced working knowledge of RF theory, electricity, analog and digital electronics, electronic circuitry, signal distribution, grounding, bonding and surge protection.

• Ability to diagnose complex failures that are not resolved solely by standard manual procedures, using schematics, signal tracing, test equipment, technical data and systematic fault-isolation techniques.

• Proficiency using multimeters, oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, signal generators and specialized OEM/NAVAIDS test equipment and diagnostic software.

• Ability to interpret and work from Technical Orders, OEM manuals, engineering drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, blueprints, technical specifications and maintenance inspection requirements.

• Experience supporting flight inspection, ground validation or certification of NAVAIDS systems, including real-time equipment adjustments and verification of system tolerances.

• Working knowledge of FAA, ICAO, DoD and OEM standards applicable to NAVAIDS, ATCALS and airfield meteorological systems.

• Experience maintaining accurate maintenance records, calibration records, outage/restoration logs, equipment status reports, parts requirements and preventive maintenance schedules.

• Ability to work effectively with a multinational workforce and coordinate technical activities with air traffic control, airfield management, engineering, safety and host-nation personnel.

Balad Mission Equipment Experience - Strongly Preferred:

• Selex/Leonardo ILS-2100 localizer and glideslope systems or equivalent precision approach systems.

• VOR-1150 or comparable VOR equipment.

• TACAN-2010 or comparable military TACAN equipment.

• DME-2020 or comparable DME equipment.

• Vaisala AWOS/RVR or comparable runway visual range and automated weather observation systems, including projector/receiver, field collection/data units, CDUs and associated calibration/alignment procedures.

• Prior work on operational military airfields supporting fighter aircraft, preferably F-16 operations, in an overseas or contingency environment.

Location Requirements

The position is located in Balad, Iraq, at Martyr Brigadier General Ali Flaih Air Base (formerly Balad Air Base), supporting an expeditionary airfield mission. Must be able to work in an austere overseas environment, comply with site access and security requirements, while providing mission support during unscheduled and emergency call-outs.
