Description of Position:
The Assistant Residence Hall Coordinator (ARHC) is directly responsible to the Residence Hall Coordinator (RHC) and represents the RHC as needed by absence or delegation. The ARHC works with the RHC and residence life student staff to create a positive living, and learning environment. ARHCs are employed on a semester basis.
Position Expectations:
Responsibility to the Residence Hall Coordinator
• Consult, report to, and assist in carrying out residence hall programs and policies
• Make recommendations regarding personnel needs of the Residence Hall (i.e. Resident Assistants)
• Report maintenance and repair needs to the RHC
• Assist in the selection and training (initial and ongoing) of the residence life student staff
• Accept no other employment (either outside or within the University) without first securing the approval of the RHC
• Commit to a flexible work schedule
Responsibility in Disciplinary Situations
• Assist residence life student staff in handling minor disciplinary infractions of residence hall rules and regulations and university policies
• Refer major disciplinary matters to the RHC
• Complete disciplinary reports in a timely fashion
Responsibility to Residence Hall Students
• Serve as a role model for residence hall students and residence life student staff by abiding by all University and Residence Life rules, regulations and policies
• Assist in planning and supervising social, recreational and educational activities
• Serve as a student liaison regarding all campus agencies and resources to enable appropriate information and referrals
• Interpret University and Residence Life rules, regulations and policies to students
• Actively create opportunities to meet with students in a positive and supportive role
Community Building
• Uphold the principles outlined in the Student Creed
• Personally welcome residents and assist residence life student staff in planning orientation programs and creating opportunities for the students to meet one another
• Assist implementation of planned educational, social, and recreational activities that address the needs of the residents and community
• Maintain established hours in order to be available and accessible to the residents and staff
• Serve as an information source to residents, by providing accurate information of campus activities and sharing knowledge of campus resources
• Maintain an attractive and current bulletin board
• Actively promote an environment in which residents can best meet their academic responsibilities while fully participating in the cultural, education, and social life of the University
• Encourage residence life student staff to foster networking systems for residents within the same major or classes to form study groups
• Encourage individual assertiveness, self-discipline, self-government, and a respect for individual rights among residents
Leadership Functions
• Exhibit responsible personal conduct both on and off the campus
• Remain in good academic and disciplinary standing
• Seek to improve the residence hall community now and for the future
• Assist staff members by serving as a concerned, non-judgmental peer advisor, whose goal is to assist residents in resolving problems
• Serve as mediator for residents in conflict
• Treat all residents fairly and impartially
• Identify and assist residents with personal, social, academic, or health related concerns
• Refer residents and residence hall student staff with problems outside your expertise to appropriate parties
Administrative Functions
• Prepare necessary reports and maintain records as required
• Meet regularly with the Residence Hall Coordinator and other Residential Life Staff
• Assist in educating and implementing fire and safety procedures
• Assume other duties as needed to benefit the hall and University
• Maintain an accurate daily log of interventions to be turned into the RHC during “One on Ones”
• Utilize the In and Out board daily
• Distribute and collect surveys as directed
• Maintain flexibility for unforeseen situations
• Assist in the opening and closing of the hall each semester and at every break period, as coordinated by the Residence Hall Coordinator
• Communicate policies and their rationale to residence life student staff and wing residents
• Confront student who fail to comply with residence hall policies in a timely and professional manner
• Work in Housing Office as scheduled

• Maintain resident and staff confidentiality
• Develop a community that respects and complies with University rules and regulations
• Recognize that personal conduct affects every residence life student staff member
• Exhibit behaviors that others can and do respect
• Actively participate in staff development programs
• Consensual sexual or romantic relationships between Residence Hall Staff and residents are prohibited with any student on his or her floor or in his or her building. Residence Hall staff members who fail to withdraw from participation in activities or decisions that may reward or penalize a student with whom the staff member has or has had a romantic or consensual sexual relationship will be subject to disciplinary actions.

Staff development:
Assistant Residence Hall Coordinators are required to participate in training sessions that are designed to increase their competence for work in the residence hall system. Such sessions include:
Any absence from such sessions must be cleared in advance with the Residence Hall Coordinator or Assistant Residence Hall Coordinator.
Required holiday duties:
Assistant Residence Hall Coordinators will be required to work holiday(s)/break(s). The Residence Hall Coordinator will coordinate these holidays.
