Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Designer to support critical engineering initiatives associated with the LBNF (Long-Baseline Neutrino Facility) Project. The successful candidate will work onsite with limited supervision to develop complex mechanical designs, advanced 3D models, and detailed engineering drawings utilizing NX1980 and Teamcenter.
This role requires extensive experience in mechanical design and drafting, application of ASME Y14.5 GD&T standards, tolerance analysis, and collaboration with multidisciplinary engineering teams. The Designer will play a key role in developing innovative design solutions, supporting project schedules, and ensuring all deliverables meet strict quality assurance standards and engineering requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain advanced mechanical designs using NX1980 CAD software and Teamcenter.
- Create complex 3D models, assemblies, layouts, and detailed manufacturing drawings.
- Apply ASME Y14.5-M-1994 (or newer) Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) standards to engineering documentation.
- Perform design tolerance analyses and stack-up calculations to validate form, fit, and function.
- Collaborate directly with engineers and technical personnel to research design concepts and develop practical engineering solutions.
- Coordinate design development activities to support project requirements, technical objectives, and schedules.
- Select and specify materials, components, and manufacturing methods appropriate for project applications.
- Support design reviews and implement approved design changes.
- Ensure all drawings and models conform to established design and drafting standards, procedures, and quality requirements.
- Maintain accurate documentation and revision control within Teamcenter.
- Deliver high-quality design packages within established deadlines.
Required Deliverables
The selected candidate will produce:
- Advanced 3D CAD models
- Mechanical layout designs
- Detailed fabrication and assembly drawings
- Design tolerance analyses
- Dimensional stack-up calculations
- Engineering documentation supporting project requirements
All deliverables will be developed in NX1980 and managed through Teamcenter. Deliverable quantities will be assigned based on project requirements.
Required Qualifications
Education
- Associate's degree, Technical Degree, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience in Mechanical Design, Drafting, Engineering Technology, or a related field.
Experience
- Minimum 10 years of experience using NX CAD software integrated with Teamcenter.
- Minimum 5 years of recent experience as a Mechanical Designer supporting engineering projects.
- Demonstrated experience creating complex mechanical systems, assemblies, and manufacturing drawings.
Technical Skills
- Advanced proficiency with NX1980.
- Expert understanding of Teamcenter data management and configuration control.
- Strong working knowledge of ASME Y14.5 GD&T standards.
- Ability to create and manage advanced 3D models using sophisticated CAD features and methodologies.
- Experience performing tolerance analysis and stack-up calculations.
- Ability to produce accurate and detailed 2D engineering drawings for fabrication and assembly.
- Knowledge of mechanical materials, manufacturing processes, and engineering practices.
- Strong problem-solving and technical communication skills.
Quality Assurance Requirements
All work shall be performed in accordance with:
- Fermilab Quality Assurance Manual (QAM)
- APS-TD Design and Drafting Procedures
- Applicable engineering standards and project requirements
All completed work products will be reviewed, checked, and approved by designated Fermilab personnel responsible for the assigned task.
Pre-Employment Requirements
Candidates must:
- Successfully demonstrate proficiency in NX1980 CAD software through a virtual technical interview conducted via Zoom.
- Demonstrate advanced knowledge of Teamcenter and associated design workflows.
- Provide evidence of experience creating advanced 3D models and detailed GD&T-based engineering drawings.
- Demonstrate the ability to deliver accurate, high-quality work products in deadline-driven engineering environments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting large-scale scientific, research, manufacturing, aerospace, defense, energy, or accelerator-based engineering projects.
- Experience working within highly regulated engineering environments.
- Familiarity with design review processes, configuration management, and engineering change control procedures.
- Experience collaborating within multidisciplinary engineering teams.
