    Job description

    Overview / Responsibilities

    Overview:

Wood is currently recruiting for a talented and ambitious Senior Ornithologist, in order to support the delivery of a number of exciting infrastructure projects in the UK. Our long established, but still growing team delivers high quality ecological services on complex projects in a variety of sectors including renewables, nuclear, other power, waste, minerals and property.

Due to our expanding project portfolio Wood require a Senior Ornithologist to join our Ecology team, working throughout the UK. You will be working within an established team of Ornithologists and Ecologists and will be expected to provide assistance and support for our on-going workload across a broad variety of projects.  This role can be based in any of our UK offices (Newcastle upon Tyne, Leeds, Glasgow, Shrewsbury, Knutsford, Bristol, Leamington Spa, Birmingham, London or Reading).

Wood offers an excellent salary package, including a company car for almost all ecologists, a tailored training programme and great opportunities for career progression.

    Key Responsibilities:

The main focus of the role will be task management responsibilities including the management of site fieldwork schedules, production and technical review of baseline bird reports, ornithological data gathering, surveying and the interpretation of results, inputting into EIA and HRA, client liaison and undertaking some business development tasks. There will also be the opportunity to assist the wider ecology team with other ecological surveys.

    Skills / Qualifications

    Qualifications and Experience:

Qualified to degree level (or equivalent) in a relevant ecological / environmental subject, you will be a competent and appropriately experienced Ornithologist. You will have good bird identification skills, be familiar with a range of species specific and generic bird survey techniques and have a good knowledge of bird ecology. Typically, we would expect more than four years of experience in ornithological survey and appraisal or field-based research to have developed the skills required for the post. Additional experience in resource management, project management and proposals are also important for this role. Wider ecological survey skills would be highly desirable although not essential.

Membership of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management would be beneficial. A valid UK driving licence is essential for this role as is the flexibility to work unsocial hours and to work away on site when required.
