    Job description

    The Aquatics Director is responsible for the leadership, development, and daily operations of the YMCA’s aquatics programs at our Daleville, VA location. This position ensures safe, high-quality programming while developing staff, engaging members and participants, and maintaining compliance with YMCA standards and applicable regulations.

    Essential Functions

    • Oversee daily operations of the aquatics department, including pools, programs, schedules, and activities.
    • Recruit, train, supervise, and develop aquatics staff, lifeguards, instructors, and volunteers.
    • Ensure compliance with YMCA, health department, safety, risk management, and applicable regulatory standards.
    • Develop and evaluate aquatics programs that meet the needs of members and the community.
    • Monitor staffing, certifications, training, and lifeguard coverage to maintain safe operations.
    • Manage department budgets, supplies, equipment, and facility needs.
    • Promote exceptional member service and create a welcoming, inclusive environment.
    • Respond appropriately to emergencies, incidents, and safety concerns and ensure required documentation is completed.
    • Collaborate with other departments and leadership to support overall YMCA goals, membership engagement, and community impact.
    • Participate in YMCA events, staff meetings, trainings, and other organizational activities as needed.

    Qualifications

    • High school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework or degree in a related field preferred.
    • Previous aquatics, lifeguarding, or supervisory experience required.
    • Current YMCA or nationally recognized lifeguard, CPR/AED, and First Aid certifications, or ability to obtain within required timeframe.
    • Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and customer service skills.
    • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
    • Ability to respond quickly and appropriately to emergencies and maintain a safe aquatics environment.
    • Successful completion of a national background check.

    Physical Requirements

    Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time, and use a computer, telephone and related business equipment are necessary to this position. Must be able to communicate effectively with others. Must be able to be in the water and/or on the pool deck for extended periods of time and remain alert with no lapses of consciousness. Verbal communication and the ability to project voice across a distance required. Must be able to hear noises and distress signals and respond appropriately. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds with assistance and handle pool chemicals as needed.
