    Job description

    As part of our new Downtown Boise YMCA, we are seeking a Makerspace Coordinator to join our team! This person creates a safe, welcoming environment where youth, families, and community members can explore, create, and learn through hands-on experiences. This position develops and leads Makerspace programs, trains and supports instructors and volunteers, oversees equipment and supplies, and helps participants build confidence as they learn new skills. This is a working supervisor position with regular time spent teaching and supporting programs.

    Opening in December 2026, the new Downtown Boise YMCA will become a vibrant destination for health, wellness, recreation, and community connection in the heart of Downtown Boise. The state-of-the-art facility will offer something for everyone.     Schedule:

    This is a full-time position at 40 hours weekly with benefits!  Schedule requirements are Monday through Friday, 10:00am to 6:00pm. Pay: $17.30-$25.95/hour.

    Responsibilities:

    • Develop, coordinate, and lead high-quality Makerspace programs for youth, families, and adults, as directed by the Youth Director. Programs may include creative arts, digital design, 3D printing, sewing, electronics, robotics, media production, and other hands-on learning experiences.
    • Serve as a working supervisor by regularly teaching classes, facilitating open lab hours, and assisting participants with projects and equipment.
    • Recruit, onboard, schedule, train, and coach assigned staff and volunteers. Model strong instruction, positive behavior guidance, and excellent member service.
    • Establish and consistently enforce age-appropriate safety procedures for tools, equipment, materials, and work areas. Ensure participants receive instruction and demonstrate readiness before using equipment independently.
    • Oversee the safe use and routine care of Makerspace equipment, which may include 3D printers, a laser cutter, a vacuum former, a 3D scanner, sewing machines, electronics, and video or audio equipment. Coordinate maintenance and repairs with the appropriate staff or vendors.
    • Maintain clear operating procedures, equipment training records, required program records, incident documentation, and inventory. Follow YMCA policies and manufacturer guidance.
    • Plan lessons and projects that encourage creativity, problem solving, collaboration, and skill development. Adapt instruction for different ages, abilities, and experience levels.
    • Coordinate class schedules, open lab opportunities, school or homeschool programs, special events, and community partnerships in collaboration with the Youth Director and other departments.

    Qualifications:

    • Two or more years of experience teaching, coordinating, or supporting hands-on educational, arts, technology, or community programs; equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
    • Demonstrated ability to teach technical or creative skills to beginners in a welcoming, understandable way.
    • Experience using or learning tools commonly found in a Makerspace, such as 3D printers, design software, sewing machines, electronics, or media equipment.
    • Ability to deliver support and provide oversight across varied hours, including consistent participation during evening events (4-7pm) and weekends.
    • Excellent human relations skills and an ability to maintain position communication with staff and members.

    REQUIRED LICENSURE AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS:

    • CPR/AED - Prerequisite upon hire – 14-day compliance period.
    • First Aid Certification - Prerequisite upon hire – 14-day compliance period.
