Engineer I Civil/Structural

Position Summary

Zachry Engineering Corporation (ZEC) is seeking a Civil/Structural Engineer I to join our growing engineering organization in Charlotte, NC. This entry-level position supports the design and execution of major Power, Energy, and Industrial projects, with a primary focus on steel and concrete structures. The Engineer I will work under the guidance of experienced engineers and multidisciplinary teams to develop safe, economical, and constructible engineering solutions throughout all phases of project execution.

This role offers an excellent opportunity for recent graduates and early-career engineers to gain hands-on experience on large EPC, design-build, and industrial infrastructure projects while developing technical expertise in structural analysis, design, and project delivery.

Responsibilities

What You'll Do

As a Civil/Structural Engineer I, you will:

• Assist with the design and analysis of steel, reinforced concrete, and foundation systems for industrial and power facilities
• Prepare engineering calculations, design sketches, drawings, specifications, and material take-offs under the supervision of senior engineers
• Apply fundamental engineering principles, industry standards, and applicable building codes to project designs
• Support the development of conceptual and detailed structural designs
• Coordinate engineering activities with civil, mechanical, electrical, piping, and construction teams
• Review supplier and vendor submittals for technical compliance with guidance from experienced engineers
• Participate in design reviews, constructability evaluations, and resolution of technical issues
• Support field activities including site walkdowns, construction support, field investigations, and troubleshooting
• Contribute to the delivery of safe, high-quality, and cost-effective engineering solutions
• Continuously develop technical knowledge through mentorship, training, and project experience

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or related discipline from an ABET-accredited university
• 0-2 years of civil/structural engineering experience, including internships, co-op assignments, or relevant project experience
• Basic understanding of structural steel and reinforced concrete design principles
• Familiarity with engineering codes and standards, including AISC, ACI, and IBC
• Exposure to structural analysis and design software such as STAAD.Pro, RISA, Enercalc, or similar tools through coursework, internships, or professional experience
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, team-oriented environment
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications

Preferred Qualifications

• Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or ability to obtain certification within the first year of employment
• Internship, co-op, or project experience supporting industrial, energy, utility, manufacturing, or power generation facilities
• Master's degree in Structural Engineering or a related discipline
• Exposure to EPC, design-build, or heavy industrial projects
• Experience with AutoCAD, Revit, or other engineering design software
• Interest in supporting construction and field engineering activities
